Now I am not really sure what to make of all of this. What surprised me was that there were so many different IP addresses but all of them were using the same kind of an attack. So I decided to do a bit of investigating and I port scanned some of these addresses. Soon I came across what seemed to me to be a honeypot. The results of the port scanned I have pasted below:

Almost every imagianable port is open. I mean that has to be a honeypot. It can not be any thing else. If I was more specific this looks to me a lot like the windows opensource honeypot which I my self experimented with on many a occasion. It opens over a thousand ports. So I would say that this machine is running some version of windows on it with the honeypot. There is probablly some firewall behind it so there is not point in going any further because I am sure it is very secure. So I did the only thing that I could. I reported the IP address on a website. Which proves that there is a bit of a white hat hacker in me. If these actions translate into white hat hacker acts I do not know but I do not like script kiddies that dose and stuff like that. It is all very lame.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009
A few weeks ago some one came on one of my favorite sites called suck-o. He was apparently a racist and started to talk about computers which he apparently did not know any thing about. So I decided to open a thread entitled, "Racists are scums." This is of course true and I believe that. In addition it had the objective to lure that racist to the thread. That is indeed what happened. What happened is best described by some one who helped to put that racist back into his place and I want to quote DrVirus, "P.S. I belive you have distinct problem with reading. This topic says racists are scum. Now as much as I know lyecdevf he meant the people who discriminate in the basis of race. And take degenerative actions against every race but his own. No one actually called you that. Yet you made this your war. NO ONE CALLED YOU SCUM."

That is exactly what happened. He started a war that he could not win because racism in this world is by default a lost war. It was fun though to watch him try to win that war and his vain struggle. I am now going to post parts of that thread to allow people to see the darkness in which these racists live. Any way this is how I started the thread:

For me race never was an issue. Issues that I am concerned about are poverty, ecology, and so on. However, lately it has come to my attention that there is an increasing amount of racism present in the world around us and I am becoming ever more concerned. There is more and more talk about gypsies and other ethnic minorities. I am writing this thread in order to underline that it is never O.K. to hurt another human being on the basis of race.

People who believe that members of another race do not deserver equal opportunities are simply put sub human. When ever I hear or come across racism I am angered. I do not believe that this fits into a society. Any way what do you think about this

The first to post was one of the administrators there. He is very much involved on that site and his comment rejoiced me:

I strongly agree. Racism is really something that should have died a few hundred years ago, and those who still hold on to the more extreme racist thoughts are doing so because of stupidity and because they don't know any better.

After that the older administrators posted. I do not necessarily agree with what they had to say but because they are older individuals I do have to respect them. Any way after which the first loser comments by the racist were posted. Here I quote the whole comment:
I completely agree with DNR and Cats. I am proud of being white. I take it a step further and say I'm proud of being Italian. If I were Black then I would be proud of that fact because that would be who I am and I can be nothing but proud of who I am.

Don't confuse racism with prejudice. There is a significant difference. Racism is when you're proud of your race. You don't have to hate others based on a look. Prejudice on the other hand is when you categorize a people on certain outstanding qualities, i.e. skin color.

I am a racist. however I can look at a black man as my equal or better but I can also look at a nigger as my inferior. The same goes with my fellow white. I can look on a cracker as an inferior.

If you're a religious person you have to believe that God made us different for a reason and who are we to change what he/she has made.

Whites are by far not the most racist people on the planet. Orientals are. If you have the opportunity I would highly recommend reading The Bell Curve. It goes into the differences of the races.
After which some people took offense of the fact that he said that...I just can not doing. I just got tears in my eyes. Any way light soon shone on our little thread by another quality post by DrVirus:
I see a lot of people are saying stuff like "I am proud to be white/black/brown" and stuff like "I am a proud member of ------ country". I don't usually do it in this website, but I would like to differ.

I do not consider myself as a part of some country or some race or some religion cause my parents were a part of it. I am a born brown Indian who is supposed to be a member of the Hindu religion. But I like to call myself a global citizen rather than an Indian and I am a hardcore Atheist and I never really considered my skin before reading this topic.

I do not belong to any race, community or religion. And I guess I am pretty proud of it too.
That is how I feel too. I do not belong to any race, community or religion. I am a global citizen.

I do not take part in half of all the things that happen on this world. I believe that some individual want to drag people into issues such as race, poverty, child abuse,...and so on but I do not want to take any part in such debates and issues at all and had not that racist showed up at one of my favorite forums I would not of have even bothered to make that thread. I just want to stay clear of these issues that plague society. I am not a racist, I do not care about racists, and I do not want to deal with these issues of race, prejudice,...at all. I just want to live my life with out clutering my mind with such issues in the first place. Any way I believe I got off topic here a bit.

The racist than continued to prove to us that he really lives in complete darkness. He even went on to accuse me that, "I hate people who hate." I guess in the world that he lives he does not even see that is so funny. We all thought that was funny and this is what I had to say about this:

You say racists are scum but what you really mean is people who hate are scum (I hate you for this reason). That's basically what this comes down to: Hate. You don't like the fact that I dislike/hate others and in turn you hate me for this. This is some form of -ism in itself. I don't know the name one would call you when you hate those who hate.
One word comes to mind...ignorance. In fact I kind of lost my breath when I read that. Should I even continue debating with you? I wonder what would be the point because apparently you do not posses the intellectual ability to debate with me. I mean where in the world did you come to the conclusion that I hate racists because I hate people who hate. OMG,...that is so funny. Where did you get that from. You just pull it out of the air? Maybe that is some kind of -ism and I do not know what that is because I have never debated with such...low life.

Why would I hate people who hate? I hate plenty of people but my prejudice is not based on color, creed or nationality. For instance I hate many people in the entertainment industry because I believe that they are fakes who do not deserve to be famous and rich. For instance I have Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Jack Black, Beyonce, and countless others.
Any way after that he gave up and did not post any more. The light has won over darkness and I could sleep once more in hope to see a world filled with light.

S.L.A.I.

Tuesday, June 2, 2009
There is this game that I love to play a lot so it needs to be mentioned. It is called S.L.A.I. It is a robot mash. The funny thing is that I did not even know I would like a robot mash game. Before this game I did play a similar game called Ring of Red which also had giant robots fighting. I also loved that game and played it a lot but eventually I got tired of it. This game thought it seems like I am not going to get tired of so easily. I am at the moment as enthusiastic about it as I was at the beginning or even more.

I remember those early days when I first started to play it. I do not even know when that was because it was such a long time ago. I just believe that it must have been some time in the beginning of 2008. Any way I was not so sure that I would like it. It took me a while to learn how to play and by that I mean to use weapons, earn money and most importantly fight. It was not easy because I did not earn a lot of the virtual money to upgrade my SV. I have read from other reviews that this is one of the main issues that is touched upon.  For instance I wanted to upgrade my SV with better weapons but with no money I could not do that. The SV I chose to buy was the Carro. It seemed like a good choice because it was in between the heavy SV’s and the light weight SV’s.

Any way like I have said I wanted to upgrade my SV. When I got it from the shop it really did not sport much weaponry. The weapons that I wanted though were not cheap and there were some other things that I had to purchase at the beginning like O.C generators for invisibility, paint kits,.... So those early days were not much fun. I was always short of virtual money and I was still getting to know the game.

However, things eventually improved. I managed to get enough money to buy myself another SV. I chose the one from the heavy weights-The Hartman. I fitted it with caterpillars and some powerful weapons. I was just one mean machine. It combat it was almost indestructible. Its only flaw was that it was slow. It also turned out that it was not so indestructible after all because it could not win against the boss. So my tactic at the beginning was to simply avoid him. When the boss arrived into the arena I exited the arena for fear of losing the fight. Eventually thought I realized that I was going to have to find a way to defeat him as opposed to always running away.  Was not I silly?!

It is actually more complicated because there was not just one of them bosses. At the beginning though I was still very much confused and I did not realize that but it turned out that there were multiple bosses. In fact each category had it is own boss or ranker. In addition to that each category was divided on day time and night time. Because there are four categories ranging from D-A that meant there were eight bosses to defeat. All of that thought did not come immediately into perspective so back than I was not very concerned about that. I was very much focused on defeating that nasty SV that had the red health bar and was extremely powerful.

I started experimenting with weapons on my Carro SV. It was clear to me already back than that I could only take my Carro SV to battle. It was light weight enough for me to be able to run if need be and strong enough to take a few hits. However, I was still in the dark about what kind of a weapon to use against the boss. I tried to find some elevated position upon which I would unload my weapons on the boss in hope of destroying it. That was not such a problem. There were many such places in the New York arena where I was more or less fighting in the beginning. That is where you start of course and even though you can move to other arenas I decided to stick there for a while until I figure stuff out.

Still I did not achieve any actual results. As soon as I fired a rocket at the boss an immediate response would follow and I had to retreat if that was possible at all. It was really incredible how fast those bosses reacted and fired upon me.

Back than I armed my self mainly with rockets launchers.  I would put two of those on my Carro SV shoulder positions.  I would go around blasting every ting in the arena.  My Carro SV was an awesome sight with those those two rocket launchers mounted in the shoulder positions.  The thing is that while rockets did work with the majority of foes that I encountered it did not seem to do the trick with the boss.  The problem was that they would give away my location to the boss even when I was using my O.C. The O.C. as I mentioned is a neat features of this game as it allow one to make their CV temporally invisible.

It took me a while to figure out that when firing machine guns and using optical camouflage the boss would not be able to locate me. It was one of those eureka moments for me in this game.  The irony of this was that I was using a weapon that I figured was the weakest one of all.  If you can chose from rocket launchers, shot guns, and other high tech weapons it is difficult to look at the machine gun without a slight prejudice.   After all rockets has a nice feature that once the target was marked it would follow it around corners if the foe tried to evade it and only in extreme circumstances the rockets would not hit the intended target.  Compared to that the machine gun was really low tech but in this game it worked for me from that moment onward.  In fact I soon realized that the machine gun had one key benefit over other weapons.  To fire rockets and other stuff you needed the foe to be a certain distance from you in order to get a lock-on because with out it you could not fire a rocket.  It was not the case with the machine guns.  I could destroy a foe way across the arena with my machine guns when I could in no way do so with rockets because the intended target was too far away.

Of course I realized that bullets are too small to see but a rocket is easy to spot and follow the smoke trail that it leaves behind back to my location. After that things went smoothly. I managed to defeat boss by boss by finding an elevated position, using optical camouflage and firing only machine guns to defeat the rankers. Eventually I equipped my Carro SV with only machine guns. One machine gun in particular that is only available for the Carro model to equip the arms looks like the one used in the Predator movie with the rotating barrels. It is extremely powerful and I used that in addition with other machine guns to fire upon the bosses.

After I was finished with the bosses in New York arena I decided to move to another arena to take my destruction there too. There were another six arenas or hubs for me to move on and each of them had eight rankers for me to defeat. It was about that time when it downed on me that I would have to defeat another 46 rankers and another 7 class rankers plus the three top rankers. I was not too happy. It seemed like a lot of work. I had to defeat another 56 rankers. At least I had the technique to do this now and some extra money to buy new weapons. Still the following few months of playing proved to be stressful as further I moved towards the top the stronger and more powerful the rankers got. Some were not difficult to defeat at all thanks to the technique that I developed but that technique came into question when I went up against the second world ranker called Luke. His SV was a Hartman. I have seen better SV’s than his but it was his massive shoulder weapon that proved extremely dangerous. At the time I have not seen anything like that. The shock wave of that shell which he fired was so enormous that I had to run on the other side of the arena to escape it. The shock wave was also very damaging if you got caught in it. Without a full health bar you were soon a goner and the shell did not even have to land close to you and no wall protected you from it. My usually way of defeating bosses by looking for some elevated position upon which I would fire seemed implausible in this situation. I had to devise something different all together. I was not prepared to give up after coming so far.

After being defeated by the second ranker many times I eventually realized that he does not have many shells to fire. There was a way for me to provoke him to fire and get out of the blast zone before too much damage was sustained. After that I would replenish my health while he was trying to locate me. Eventually he ran out of those shells and the rest of his weapons were not so destructive. All I had to do now was to get a clear sight of vision and fire my machine guns on him. I do not remember now exactly how that happened but I saw him somewhere in the arena and under camouflage I fired upon him. He did not know where the bullets where coming from and was turning in all the wrong directions while his health bar was speedily decreasing. It was a tense few moments but it was worth it I think. I was like, yeah! Finally I defeated you and just one more ranker stood in my way until my complete victory. It turned out that the number one ranker was not that difficult to defeat at all. I just took my usual technique and before I knew it I won. I was number one ranker. OMG, I finally came to the end of the game.

So that was the end of it…or was it. I am still playing the game and getting better at it. One of the great things about this game is that even after you have defeated all the bosses and you are now the number one ranker in H.A.V.E.N. the virtual world where all this takes place you can still play the game, earn the virtual money and upgrade your SV. In fact I do not believe that it is quite over. Under the status it says that I have completed 70% of the game. Where is the rest of the 30%? I have yet no idea. All of the internet sites that I have gone to in order to find more information about this do not say much. I also have not yet been able to get access to the other three SVs and the weapons they come with. I have fought many a ranker with such a SV. They sport some exotic weapons like laser cannons which I have not seen anywhere else. They are also less bulky and better designed than the regular SVs.

In the last few months I have also become better at fighting. For instance I have now become better at avoiding rockets that are fired at me. In S.L.A.I. it is possible to do so. For instance when you see a SV firing a rocket at you there is a second or so before it hits you depending on the distance of the enemy SV. So when you become good you can actually avoid the rocket. In any case it is good to jump from right to left to avoid being a sitting target. That is how it is in any such game.

Recently I have also sold all the SV’s that I have bought over time and kept just two. Both of them are zwergs. After I have equipped them and configured them to my desires the zwerg SV has become my favorite SV. I have now fought with the zwerg for so long and I have not gotten tired of it. I have used others as well. Through most of the game I used the KHT SV. I am not really sure why I chose this one. I guess it just worked well for me. I equipped it with four machine guns and I went out to destroy one boss after another. It was great for any kind of fight. It was light weight so I could position it on some elevated ground from which I would fight but now after killing all the bosses I just felt like I do not need it any more. I bought all kinds of SV’s just for fighting the bosses. I even got the ultra light weight SV called the proton and equipped it with machine guns. I fought with it too for some time. It came very handy.

Now after selling all of these SV’s that I purchased and equipped I have about 15 million virtual money. Now that is a lot. I could buy just about anything that I need. For me money is no longer an issue. In SLAI terms I am now rich. In fact in all I have earned 30 million. So during the course I have squandered half. OMG! Where did all that money go? Well I am sure quite a lot of that I lost because of the SV’s that I bought and then sold them again. You lose money like that because you can never get as much money back as much as you have given when purchasing a certain weapon or SV. I have made several outright mistakes when purchasing stuff but that again I was new to all this and I had to buy certain weapons in order to test them out.

There are loads of weapons in SLAI. That is exactly why I like it so much. One really has a lot of options on how to approach the game by choosing the weapons and the style of fighting. One of my favorite weapons if not the most favorite weapon was the anti-SV gun for the Hartman SV with 100mm ammo. There is just nothing else that compares to it. It does not fire rockets but grenades and one of the benefits of that is that it leaves no smoke trail like rockets. Like the bullets that are fired there is no limit to how far they can be fired. So you can fire that grenade to the other side of the arena which is something that you cannot do with rockets since they self detonate in the air. The rockets only work when you lock on the target and you can lock on the target from a certain distance. If the target is too far you cannot lock on it and therefore you cannot fire rockets at it. The anti-sv with 100 mm ammo though can hit the target even when it is beyond your ability to lock onto it. It is the same with machine guns but bullets do not explode. The 100mm grenade thought is going to damage a SV even if it does not directly hit it. Of course the amount of damage that is going to be caused to the SV is going to be minimal but sometimes that does not even matter. Sometimes all I want to do is say, “hey be careful, I am here and you better start running now if you do not want to get a 100mm grenade in your head.” So I would give it 10 out of 10.

None of the other SV’s has a weapon like that. They have rockets, machine guns or lasers. The Hartman is the only one with such a weapon. I used Harman a lot during the early days. I have spent a lot of virtual money on it but I also earned a lot with it. I remember one particular time when I was fighting with it in the London arena. I earned 160,000 virtual money that time. I equipped it with a plasma cannon which is incredibly powerful and almost any SV would get severely damaged after firing at it. Sometimes I would after coming out of the gate find several enemy SVs and I would just fire all four weapons at them destroying them within a few seconds. It felt good.

For all the benefits of the Hartman with its massive and bulky hull that is hard to penetrate and its amazing array of weapons it had one huge down side. It was slow and most of the time I could not use it on A and B class which is where the harder fighting went on. Just because the SVs there were better equipped and possessed sometimes very powerful weapons. That is why I used the light weight SV’s like the KHT that I equipped with machine guns and fired upon them under OC (optical camouflage) possibly from some elevated positions with the ability for a fast escape if need be.

The massive grenade launcher with the 380mm ammo for the zwerg for the arms changed all that. I knew about the existence of this weapon way before I ever got to use it. It was used against me at least two times before I got to buy it. It is a difficult weapon to come by and most of the time it is not available. When I saw it in action in the Cairo arena by one of the bosses I knew that I had to have it. It was simply put nothing like I have seen before. The grenade could be launched from any area in the arena and it would hit the other side of the arena. The blast from it was just amazing. I talked previously about my once favorite weapon the anti-SV grenade launcher with 100mm ammo. Now imagine a grenade almost 4 times stronger. In addition to that the zwerg was a level lighter than its big brother the Hartman. After I equipped it with machine guns I saw no need for the KHT, Hartman, or any other SV that I ever had. It simply replaced all of them. Its weapons meant that it could do the job of the light weight KHT as well as the job of the heavy weight Hartman. In essence I got both of them in one single package.

I have equipped my zwer with two of those weapons on the arms.  I made both of them light 99 which cost a lot but with 51 greandes I can take on any foe that comes my way.  I use it now as my only SV not just because it is my favorite set up but because I also get sponsorship from the zwerg company that sells them for some kind of advertisement for using the zwerg.  The percentage from the money I earn by fighting in the arena is a good sum of money that makes it a bit more fun.  Of course I have now enough money to purchase any thing I want.  In fact the game tells me that I have completed some where around 71% of the game.  So I still have to buy all three secret SV's, paint kits, and other accessories to complete the game.  So it is not over yet. ;)

Crazy-coderz.com & w4ck1ng.com

Friday, April 3, 2009
In the previous year two of my favorite internet communities were shutdown. In both cases the owners shut them down. The two sites that I am talking about were the crazy-coders.com and w4ck1ng.com. Now the first site used to be popular warez community. I registered on its way back when I was still using windows and I needed loads of warez. After a while though I stopped using windows so I did not need any warez any more but I still liked to hang out on the site. It was just a friendly like place on the net where I felt comfortable.

The other site w4ck1ng.com was a popular hacker site. It was also a friendly community where I felt welcomed. In addition to that there were loads of people who really knew what they were talking about. All is not lost though because there still is an IRC channel. In retrospect IRC is all one really needs. So w4ck1g.com is still alive and kicking as long as the IRC is up.

After I posted my tutorial on how to secure ones router on w4ck1ng.com I even got a “privileged,” status. Meaning that I had access to another hidden board where only a few registered members had access to. Of course I was flattered. If I remember correctly I had the “infosec pro,” privileged status. There were others as well even more privileged. One of my associates G-brain held the top one. I could have asked him what kind of stuff they had on the board that he had access to but I never did. He at least to me seemed to act kind of wired. He was using slackware operating system at the time and was acting awfully full of himself. In the circles that I frequent one with real knowledge is referred to as elite or 1337. To me he acted like that and I did not like that. Any way I felt good on the w4ck1ng.com. It was a great site!

Crazy-coderz.com also had a hidden board but it was a VIP board and one had to pay for it. I never paid for anything so far on the net. Besides that I would never buy myself a VIP access to a site. The only thing that I see a good reason to purchase on the net is a private proxy access so that I could surf the IRC channels anonymously.

Any way it is these two internet sites that I kind of felt bad after they were shut down. I was really upset and almost hurt in a way. I guess it may seem odd to someone when I talk about feeling hurt after a site that I really liked has been shut down. To me though these two sites were like two of my best friends. I had many friends and acquaintances that I lost in my life that I never felt bad for losing. Because in life you befriend sometimes people for various reasons and I did that a lot. Sometimes there was just no one else there to talk to and so on but on the internet that is different. All the sites are always available no matter how far they are located no one has a problem reaching them. One has thousands of sites to choose from at any given time. So it is not like in real life where depending on where you live you have only a hand full of people you can befriend. I had many friends like that in my life and when I changed location or whatever I left them behind. Sometimes I was glad that I left them behind. Any way I do not want to get now into some kind of extensive comparison and contract between the virtual and real world.

OpenSuse 11.1 and Mandriva 2009 dualboot!

Wednesday, January 14, 2009
I just got my self some linux stickers. I had to go to the photo shop to get some linux wallpapers printed out on adhesive paper. I think that this is a must for a serious linux user as my self.

Linux indeed is great. For instance today I turned on the computer. My mandriva instalation for some reason did not allow me to log in. I do not know why. I guess because mandriva is not a reliable distro. However, I solved the problem. I had a suse 11.1 DVD lying around and I popped it in in order to set up a dual boot. I have not set up any partitions. I just thought for some reason that it would work but it did not. Any way at least I had a suse installed on my box I thought to my self. Than I loged in and behold...all my files from mandriva were there. I was just like...wow...how did that happen? I was so perplexed. Even the torrent files were all there. All I had to do was install Ktorrent from repositories and when I ran Ktorrent for the first time I did not even need to import torrent files because they were all there. On top of that the Xcaht program that I use for IRC that I configured in Mandriva was already configured in OpenSuse 11.1. Wonderfull! I do not even have to now take the steps and time to configure Ktorrent, Xchat, and other programs. Just when I thought that this would ruin my day it all seemed to work out in the end. That is how linux works I guess. It screws with you around a lot but if you have time on your hand you can make it work for you. It just happens that I do have time to play around with my linux installations.

The only thing that I might miss about Mandriva 2009 powerpack was all those X11/windows mannagers that I had installed. I had at least a dozen to chose from and I was just using IceWM. I have to say that I liked it and it was not too difficult for me to get used to. So now I am thinking whetehr I should use gnome or IceWM on my new linux instllation.

I have become quite accustomed to suse. I have been using it now for over a year and I plan to use it for some more time at least. Maybe I am always going to use it. Maybe I am going to move away from rpm packets and into tar.gz. Maybe I am going to start using slackware or gentoo. For the time being these linux distors still seem to be a bit too advance for me. One day maybe that is going to change. In the past few weeks I have been thinking of using slacware because it seems to me to make sense. Although it does not have repositories like most distros and it takes more time to install programs but if you look at it from the point of view that you are using progrmas straight from the developers you may gain some advantage. It is said that programs compiled from source run faster. I am not really concerned about speed though. I just figure installing from source means you cut out the middle person who turns that tar.gz into a rpm. I just think that makes sense in a way.

Youtube gave away user details! [usernames & passwords]

Thursday, December 4, 2008
The story began on June 1. 2006. I have been using linux just for just two or three months. I was still using Mandriva with the KDE desktop. Any way I came across a Google dork that showed the login details of all websites that hosted youtube videos. I was just browsing youtube as usual checking all the videos under "hacking," when I found this video by some one who claimed that with this google dork one could find all these logins of sites that hosted youtube videos. Sure enough I checked it out and it turned out to be true. There were more than 100 of those sites. Of course to some I could not get access to because they had some additional security features but for the majority I got access to there ftp servers.

I remember that I was very excited that day. I am telling you this because in some wired way it had a significant impact on me. You see I was not having much fun with linux at the time because I was such noob and I did not know how to do any thing on it. I was frustrated with it but I was not going to go back to windows. That simply was not a solution for me. Any way summer was around the corner and I knew that nothing exciting would happen that summer because I had only the usual stuff scheduled for that summer. One of which involved a family trip to the sea and stuff like that. So than this happened and I spent the whole day browsing these sites and I forgot for a moment what a noob I was on linux. So it came sort of at a critical moment in my life.

I never attempted to deface any of these websites. Actually I never revisited any of those websites even though I saved some of those login details. I could have gone back some time later to see if the login details had been changed or if they are still the same. I never did so because I never really wanted to do any harm. I used that to put some excitement in my life which I needed and that was it. So if any one wants to blame me for that fine but the way I see it if you put youtube videos on your site you deserve to get hacked. I would never do that if I was concerned about my security. I think it is stupid. You can always put a link to a youtube video or provide your own playback of the video. There is just a ton of options.

I could have kept the Google dork a secret but that was not my intention. I do not think that I would of have achieved any thing by doing so. So instead I posted the Google dork on the hacker websites that I frequent. So now if you Google my hacker handle among other things which you will see are also going to be references to this exploit.

It is quite an honor for me to be mentioned on other hacker websites. I am proud of that! In fact here is a site that mentions this exploit:

http://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/youtube-give-users-ftp-details-away.html

I did not forget to take snapshots of the event. In fact I made a video and posted on youtube and you can see it at this location:

11 steps to securing your router!

Saturday, November 1, 2008

This is a tutorial I wrote some time ago on how to secure your router.  You can find many similar tutorials on the net but I dare say that mine is a bit more detailed and extensive.  I have included a special section on firewall rules that I have not see else where.

So if you have any questions let me know and I can help you out.  A good firewalled router is one of the best measures that you can take to protect your comptuer and network.

So this are my 11 steps to securing your Internet network. Although 11 steps may seem a lot it should not take you more than half an hour to do all of this. If you have tackled this issue before this should be just fun. If you are struggling with any part of this feel free to ask or PM me. Any way this tutorial has been written for info/sec minded people so I do not think that there should be any problem.

For all those who are not sure whether this is relevant to them let me say this. The router if you have one of course is the first line of defense against any possible intruders. A router with default configuration is a lot easier to hack than one that has been properly configured. Of course the hacker needs to know your IP to hack you and if you use proxies for all your Internet activities than that is great but if you like many others use torrents or like me run a tor relay than your IP is public knowledge and in the case of a static IP you can not just change when ever you want to.

I have seen girls cry on youtube videos because a hacker penetrated there firewall and deleted all the stuff they had on the computer. It is not a pleasant sight and if you do not want to be another victim of hackers this tutorial is a pretty good start to protecting your computer and your network.

1. Update your firmware

If your router is old you need to update your firmware. How to do that you may ask? Well the first thing is that you need to do is figure out what is the name and model of the router. Than Google it and you will find the site of the manufacturer of your router. Very likely they have the new firmware you are looking for.

2. Use a strong password

If you still have the default password than I think this is one of the first things that you need to address. A strong password should be at least six characters long and should contain random letters and numbers. I recommend you to use some tool that would generate a pass phrase for you but if not try to use some 1337 language.

3. Disable upNp

Once that you have a working router and do not plan to connect any other devices to it like switches or any thing else you do not need it any more. Hackers could use this service as described on this site: http://www.gnucitizen.org/blog/hacking-the-interwebs

4. Disable ping on the wan side

Plain and simple!

5. Use protocol filters

The following is taken from the following e-book: Router Security Configuration Guide 1.1 c.This e-book is publicly accessible on the following site: http://www.nsa.gov/snac/downloads_all.cfm

6. Disable DHCP

You would want to set static LAN IP's on all of the computers that are using your router. After that you can disable the DHCP service.

7. Set firewall rules

The following is an excerpt from the e-book. You will find the following paragraphs on p.40:

• Reject all traffic from the internal networks that bears a source IP address
which does not belong to the internal networks. (Legitimate traffic
generated by sources on the internal networks will always bear a source
address within the range or ranges assigned to the internal networks; any
other traffic is attempting to claim a bogus source address, and is almost
certainly erroneous or malicious in nature.)

• Reject all traffic from the external networks that bears a source address
belonging to the internal networks. (Assuming that addresses are assigned
correctly, traffic sent from the external networks should always bear a
source address from some range other than those assigned to the internal
networks. Traffic bearing such spoofed addresses is often part of an
attack, and should be dropped by a border router.)

• Reject all traffic with a source or destination address belonging to any
reserved, unroutable, or illegal address range.

Now what does all of this mean you may ask? Well for a non-techie like me I was not sure either so I had to ask as well. Basically what it means is that you have to disable all connections coming from the outside (WAN) to the inside (LAN). So what do you need to do? You have to deny the following IP range: 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.255. Unless you are using remote asses option on your router you should implement this!

Next thing that you need to do is to prevent all internal IP ranges to connect to the out side that of course are not in use by any of the computers. So for instance if you have five computers using the 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.5 range than you should block all the other internal IP ranges. So in this case it would be 192.168.1.5-192.168.1.255 and do not forget the 192.168.1.0 LAN IP as well. You of course need the 192.168.1.1 to connect to the router because if you restrict your self from it than you would have to reset your router and start all over again.

8. Change the name of your router

Just do it!

9. Use MAC filters

Figure out all the MAC addresses of the computers that are using your router. Simply add them to the list and allow only those to use your router.

10. Use SSH to connect to the router

The last part is to use a secure way to communicate with your router. A good idea is to use SSH!

11. WIFI

If you are using WIFI you need to use some form of Encryption like Speaking for my self I found that the more I used windows the less I liked them. Until it came to the point that every day it was almost painful to turn on the computer and work on windows. Yeah, the games are great and it is easy to install programs but that is pretty much all it has to offer. So if you can manage with out your games for a while you do not really need windows at all. Sure it is difficult some times to install some applications of linux but most of the time you can use the applications that are already on your OS or you can use the GUI, package manager or Yast to install programs on it. Learning how to install from source is not that difficult and if you run into problems I just see it as a chalange. Maybe you find a bug and you can report it and in a way you are helping out the community. In windows there is no such thing, Probably they do not even look at the issue you are having. I do not think they care. They work for money and not necesarily to make people happy.

So this are my 11 steps to securing your Internet network. Although 10 steps may seem a lot it should not take you more than half an hour to do all of this. If you are using WIFI you need to use some form of Encryption like WPA2 and use a strong password. I personally prefer using cables but that is just me!

Of course this is no guarantee that some skilled hacker could not hack you. If you are really concerned about this you could try and put another hardware firewall behind the router in the shape of an old computer running smoothwall or IPcop.

Nevertheless if you followed this instructions you should have a pretty good level of security. I have done all of these things on my router and they work so I am sure they will work on yours too.
